When collecting resonates with sharing

The great Art Collector Blake Byrne, is not only the best Ambassador in Los Angeles for French Contemporary Art, but he, and overall, likes to share his passion for contemporary art. Blake Byrne and Barbara Schwan, the Executive Director of The Skylark Foundation –created in 1995- have decided a few years ago to organize a tour starting in 2013, with iconic pieces from his collection in order to seed contemporary art within the brain of students who are for most of them not familiar with contemporary art:

(….) I hope when you leave you’ll feel closer to contemporary art, and if you are not already a collector that you’ll give it some consideration because it’s one of the great choice of one’s life to collect contemporary art (…) Blake Byrn says in his presentation at the very first opening at Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University

Since 2013 and through 2016, the exhibition travels to 4 universities and colleges across the United States. The exhibitions are scheduled to coincide with each school’s calendar so that it will be on view for one semester and can be incorporated into the art history curriculum. There will also be a philanthropic component to the project in the form of a panel presentation that will be of interest not only to art history students, but to those studying law and business as well. Topics of discussion will include art collecting, philanthropy, ethics as they relate to the business of art, and the contributions individual collectors have made to establish the permanent collections of our public and private museums. Panel members may include alumni who are art collectors and donors, faculty from the art, law and business schools, and members of the community who are affiliated with museums and galleries.

The exhibition’s title comes from a 1962 painting by Andy Warhol (image all over), the earliest work in the show, and frames the exhibition as a present to be unpacked.

The exhibition presents both iconic and lesser-known works from thirty-eight of the most significant and compelling artists of the last fifty years showing a variety of medium: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, and video.

Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Blake Byrne brings together works by some of the most significant artists of the last half-century. The exhibition includes major examples of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, and video, allowing us to track a number of interwoven narratives. It does not follow a single route but, rather, strives to offer viewers multiple paths to explore a variety of artistic movements and periods, and to map subjects, formal developments, and poetic affinities throughout the evolution of recent art. Much like contemporary art itself, the themes of the exhibition are diverse, intersecting, and sometimes challenging.” Says the Curator, Joseph R. Wolin
